Dot 1-Rouen.
- Sits on the Seine River; Capital of the Haute-Normandie (Upper Normandy) region and the historic capital city of Normandy.
- Founded in the 4th century B.C. by the Gaulish tribe of the Veliocasses (also known as the Celts)
- The Romans called it Rotomagus when they conquered the area in the 1st Century AD and made it the second city of the district of Gallia Lugdunensis
Rouen was also part of what was known as "Gaul" in ancient 'Biblical' times ("Gaul" consisted of an area of provincial rule in the Roman Empire in modern day France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland and western Germany.)
The Roman Republic began its takeover of Celtic Gaul in 121 BC, when it conquered and annexed the southern reaches of the area.
There is little known about 'Celtic Gaul' BEFORE the Romans came. Most written history and 'culture' that came from Rouen stems from AFTER the Roman conquest..hence the 'religious' aspects of Rouen, as well as the architecture, culture, and 'arts'.
So to truly understand what the city of Rouen was, one must understand WHO founded Rouen. And the ROOTS of Rouen are the 'Celts' or 'Gauls'.
Countries are consistently divided and conquered throughout history, and the heritage of the people who founded the 'land' are consistently lost and replaced by the people who 'conquered' the land.
The roots of Rouen are NOT Roman. So who were the Celts/Gauls that founded Rouen? Where did they come from? What happened to them? . . .
